Obituary for William N. Van Alstine Jr.

HALFMOON On Sunday, December 9th, 2018 Bill died peacefully in his home surrounded by his family. Bill was one of four children and was born in Cohoes in 1923. He graduated from Keveny Academy in 1940 and then attended Siena College. Bill proudly served his country as a naval pilot on the carrier USS Tulagi in the Pacific Theatre in World War II. He took part in the invasion of the Phillipines, Okinawa and Iwo Jima and was awarded three Air Medals, the Victory Medal, and the Phillipines Liberation Medal.

Bill married Lucille (Tiel) Reed in 1949 and they raised four daughters and one son. In 1950, he founded the company W.N. Van Alstine and Sons, Inc with his father William Sr. and brother Robert Van Alstine. In the mid-seventies, the business was expanded to include Macaran Printed Products, named after his mother Florence Macaran. After Tiel died in 1981, Bill married Paula Lindley in1984.

Throughout his life, Bill has shared his talents with his church and community. After retiring from both businesses in 1992, Bill remained active in his community. He served on the boards of St. Mary’s Seton Health, Leonard Hospital, the Schuyler Ridge Nursing Home and the Cohoes Community Center. Bill was also active in his church, St. Mary’s of Crescent, and was recently awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award for his work as a Eucharistic minister.

Throughout his life, Bill has been dedicated to family, church, community, and education. He believed that as long as God gives you health and energy, it is a privilege to serve others.

Bill is survived by his wife Paula, and his children Marilyn Connolly (Edward), Carol Wilcox (Robert), Nicholas Van Alstine, Diane Burke (John), Kristen Van Alstine (Ted Dinsmore), Darcy Karwiel (Anthony), Lori Soucy, 16 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He is brother of the late Robert T. Van Alstine, Sarah A. Van Alstine and Anne Bartling.

Family and friends are invited for viewing Wednesday, December 12th 4-7 pm at Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad St. (Rte. 32), Waterford.
